An illustrative budget: about UGX 32 million to start, and a net income of about UGX 1.6 million a month at full production.
Poultry suits graduates: it needs little land, rewards good records and biosecurity, and generates steady cash flow. The figures below are the illustrative model in the UG-SACCO proposal; actual results depend on management, location and market prices.
Starting investment, about UGX 32 million
- Poultry house of about 100 square metres: UGX 8 million.
- Feeders, drinkers, nests and lighting: UGX 2.5 million.
- Water tank and fittings: UGX 1.5 million.
- 1,000 day-old chicks: UGX 4 million.
- Feed to point of lay, about 20 weeks: UGX 14 million.
- Vaccines, drugs, labour and utilities to point of lay: UGX 2 million.
At full production
At about 80 percent laying, the unit produces about 27 trays of eggs a day. Monthly revenue is about UGX 9.1 million, including manure. Feed, vaccines, labour and utilities cost about UGX 7.5 million, leaving about UGX 1.6 million a month before loan repayments.
Stronger in a cluster
Buying feed in bulk through a cluster can cut feed costs by 8 to 12 percent, lifting net income above UGX 2 million a month, while the enterprise buys maize and soya from local farmers.
